PAT POLOKWANE OUR FIRST OUTREACH BRANCH IN ACTION
Dr Karen Steenkamp and her faithful dog Xena, have become regular, welcome visitors at the Mitchell House Enrichment Centre, Polokwane.
Karen is actively involved in the Pets as Therapy (PAT) programme as part of her ongoing commitment of focusing on the needs of children with disabilities. And it is thanks to Karen’s own personal initiative that PAT is now spreading its community service activities in the Limpopo province.
With the aid of Xena , Karen aims to develop empathy, outward focus, nurturing skills, socialization, improved communication skills, cognitive stimulation, tactile and sensory desensitization and relaxation in a fun, non-threatening way!
Xena performs various tricks for the children, and the teenagers are encouraged to brush Xena and interact with her on a one-on-one basis.
The staff at Mitchell House Enrichment Centre at very grateful indeed for these extremely beneficial weekly sessions. See photos of Karen and Xena in action: Mitchell House Enrichment Centre
